NJIT SCHOLARSHIP

Image
I read this article recently and thought I'd cover it in my blog as it is something close to my heart.  It involves the New Jersey Institute of Technology.  Michael and Kristina Gabelli have created a new scholarship with NJIT in honor of Sal Capriglione. Sal was in fact Kristina's grandfather who was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and remained active in the Air Force Association until his death at the age of 50 in 1969.  Sal Capriglione respected the commitment of young men and women who served in the armed forces and supported them at every opportunity.  After his untimely death, Chapter 190 of the Air Force Association was renamed the "Sal Capriglione Chapter."  The Sal Capriglione Endowed Scholarship represents the three ideals that Sal held close to his heart: dedication to country, dedication to community and love of family & friends. The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Detachment 490 was established in 1949 at the N

Las Vegas Mass Shooting

So Las Vegas became the unfortunate location of the biggest mass shooting in US history.  It is a place I am more than familiar with.  A vibrant city with the motto "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas".  Unfortunately this will not be the case as this incident with not only spur on public gun debate but also change the way the world thinks of and remembers Sin City. The gun debate is a tricky one.....The US is founded upon the right to bear arms and I have heard several opinions regarding taxing the users of firearms that will fund a scheme that will pay out to victims of gun violence.  This I think will only make it more palatable to the gun advocates who will then be able to sleep in their beds at night because they have done their bit to justify owning such weapons. I think it should be focused on the ability for the general public to acquire automatic or even semi-automatic weapons for personal use.  I have owned a handgun for a number of years and thoroughly enjoy

NFL Protests

Wasn't sure if I wanted to post about this but then starting reading and listening to others and felt obliged to give my take on things..... First off as a massive Raiders fan I was disappointed in the suggestion that the Raiders spent too  much time worrying about what to do about the anthem than what to do about the Redskins in last nights game.  If anyone watched the game the Redskins were simply the better team albeit it pains me to say it.  Did the Raiders take their eye off the ball for other reasons only they will know individually but I think it is disrespectful to suggest that a well drilled team would be so naive. On the subject of disrespect I heard one commentary that called NFL players mindless thugs and as well President Trump called them SOBs.  Clearly these people don't know too many NFL players.  These are intelligent individuals who are elite level athletes.  Some of them go on to be successful businessmen and television presenters after their successful NFL

Slight change of Tact

Apart from poker my next great love is football.  I don't really follow one specific team but rather follow players...That approach might seem strange but it provides me with a lot of enjoyment.  At the moment I am struggling with what is happening in the English Premiership and the fact that some of those major stars are not playing football. Let me focus on the main three Costa, Coutinho and VVD.  I enjoy watching all three players over the years and any team would like to have them in their side.  I remember my dad talking years ago that no one was bigger than the club....sadly those days appear to be gone.  All three are not playing.  Costa appears to be the worst and I can't see anyway back to Chelsea for him so I would think that Chelsea should just get the best price and move on.  The other two are slightly different.  While you may get some die hard fans hating them forever I do believe that should we get to September 1st and they still are at Liverpool and Southampton

FANGS.......NOT THE VAMPIRE TYPE

So I read an article yesterday on Reuters that mentioned Fangs.  I thought I'd write this to try and explain. Fangs are the abbreviation for Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google.  It s a strange combination but  is probably the equivalent of the Marvel Agents of Shield.  A team made up of experts in their field and put together unstoppable. This year stocks in Fangs have provided strong returns so far and this is unlikely to change.  However these stocks must continue to see significant events in order to stimulate further upside. In 2017 Facebook (FB) was up 33%, Amazon (AMZN) 34%, Netflix (NFLX) 33% and Google (GOOG) 26% Each of these FANG stocks focus on technology and internet services and nearly all investment managers with over $100 million in assets revealed that most prominent hedge fund managers have FANGS in their portfolios. The stocks were included by reputable funds like Berkshire, Soros, Renaissance and Citadel in the early part of 2017. Recently FANGs have been

Brexit

So I have been spending some time looking at Brexit and the effect this may have on Hedge funds and UCITS in particular.  It certain looks like a lot of companies have already and are currently deciding whether Ireland, France or Germany will benefit from such change.  I spent some time recently casting an eye over some articles by the Gabelli family who have a very dynamic view of certain things in the every changing world of Brexit and indeed Trump America. The Gabelli family headed by Mario Gabelli @mariogabelli and his son Michael Gabelli @michaelgabelli have an important presence in the UK with GAMCO being recognised as an innovative business leader. To take things back a bit the world had to get used to Trump and Brexit both of which were a massive surprise to most commentators.  Certainly Mario Gabelli and Michael Gabelli believe that the industrial sector can remain positive under the Trump presidency due to increased fiscal stimulus. Mario and Michael Gabelli believe that m
